We recently stayed as a family at the Addo African home in two of the standard Rondawels. Overall it was a very enjoyable stay but it’s not perfect. The staff are amazing, happy, friendly and willing to assist with anything. The restaurant is great with a decent menu albeit not with a huge choice. Breakfast was generally pretty good. The rooms are ok but you would call them characterful, maybe a little basic when you compare with a good hotel but that’s the point isn’t it. You should not expect 5 star luxury and all the fixtures and fittings that go along with that. Little niggles:, Quite a lot of roll together in the bed. The nightly fight with the mosquito nets, which look great and I’m sure do what they are supposed to but getting in and out of bed without disturbing them is close to impossible. The only electric power in the room comes via a 4 way extension lead. Understandable but in these days of multiple devices needing to be charged can be a problem. One thing we thought quite strange was that African Home is an eco lodge and there are lots of signs about saving water and yet the sinks have no plugs. Turn on the tap and watch the water go straight down the drain. The grounds are well maintained and the other buildings, lounge arena and pool are all very nice. It has to be said though that a natural pool is not going to be everyone’s taste. There are free coffee / teas but don’t expect a wide selection and the coffee machine is quite temperamental. African Home is a really well located establishment for anyone visiting the elephant park. Even better they run both half and full day safaris that start at the hotel and will also help you to identify other activities at other game reserves close by and book them for you.
